PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound economically and industrially, from a fraction of naphtha cracking product containing a phenolic compound unsubstituted at the p-position of the hydroxyl group, and propyne, etc., by carrying out the reaction of the components and the isomerization of the by- products under specific condition using a specific common catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The titled compound useful as a raw material of epoxy resin can be produced from inexpensive raw materials, in extremely high yield and selectivity, by (1) reacting (A) a phenolic compound unsubstituted at the p- position of the hydroxyl group with (b) a fraction of cracked naphtha product containing propyne and/or propadiene in the presence of (C) a catalyst compris ing a divinylbenzene-crosslinked sulfonated polystyrene cation exchange material having an average pore diameter of <=100Angstrom , at a molar rati-o(A/B) of 3-20/1, ata temperature between the melting point of the component A and 70 deg.C, and (2) isomerizing the orthosubstitution product (a by-product) in the reaction mix ture to the para-substitution compound in the presence of the above catalyst. |
