Thermocouple limbs 1 are connected together electrically by bridges 2, 3 and are disposed between two heat exchangers, one of which comprises a flow tube 4 of a heat-conducting, resilient material such as spring steel, spring bronze or copper/zinc alloy, which is elastically deformable to allow for thermal expansion or manufacturing tolerances of the limbs 1. Inelastic heat-conducting plates 6, e.g. of Cu or Ag, may be situated between each bridge 3 and the tube 4. In the thermoelectric generator shown the warm heat exchanger comprises a large rigid tube 5 carrying several parallel axially-extending rows of thermocouples, each row having a corresponding cold exchanger 4, round its perimeter. The limbs 1 are of Si/Ge alloy, adjacent couples being joined by flexible Ag conductors. Electrically insulating, heatconducting layers 7, 9 of a ceramic such as aluminium oxide or beryllium oxide separate the bridges 2, 3 from the heat exchangers. Heat-retaining material 11 is provided around the warm ends of the limbs 1. In an alternative arrangement parallel rows of thermocouples are situated in layers spaced by alternate rigid and resilient hot and cold heat exchangers. |
