Textile material is scoured with an organic solvent and the solvent removed from the textile material in an aqueous flash-off stage, there being applied to the textile material in the aqueous flash-off stage a dyestuff or finishing agent. When steam is used in the flash off stage the textile material may be passed from the solvent bath through squeeze rollers to remove excess solvent prior to steaming and then through an aqueous flash-off stage which comprises a space in which it is contacted with steam and a water seal containing the dyestuff or finishing agent through which it is passed after steaming. When hot water is used in the flash-off stage the textile material may be passed from the solvent bath through squeeze rollers to remove excess solvent and then directly into a bath of water held at a sufficiently high temperature to flash-off the solvent and containing the dyestuff or finishing agent. The organic solvent may be trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene, 1,1,2-trichloro- 1,2,2-trifluoroethane or a mixture thereof, the dyestuff may be a water-soluble, waterdispersible or reactive dye and the finishing agent may be a softening agent or brightening agent. Prior to scouring the textile materials may contain organic solvent-soluble textile assistants, e.g. sizes, although if the textile assistants are not wholly organic solvent soluble, an aqueous scour may precede the organic solvent scour. Cotton, viscose rayon, wool or nylon fabrics may be treated. |
