PURPOSE:To attain the direct edition with the aid of an image by converting an image into a picture element signal and modifying contents of the 1st memory means for storing the obtained picture element signal and the 2nd memory means for storing previously an image and displaying at least some part of the contents of the 1st memory means. CONSTITUTION:An original 1-1 is driven in the direction of an arrow 1-9 at a constant speed, and a laser beam 1-2 scans a laser scan position in the direction of an arrow 1-10. When photosensors 1-6-1-8 detect reflected light from the original 1-1, an electrical signal responding a black/white density can be obtained from said sensors. After the electrical signal is converted into a binary signal at '0' or '1' level, it is impressed to a controller 3-2, and stored in a ROM3-4. Image memory sequentially stores the binary signals obtained from a reader 30-1, operates the switch 3-13 of an operation part 3-6 and displays contents of an image memory 3-9. Thus the original is divided into an image unit block and erased, inserted and corrected by the block, whereby a character is never divided, and a processing operation such as edition can be extremely facilitated.
