PURPOSE:A liquid crystal with high gradation and luminance, prepd. by adding a specified compd. to a twisted nematic liquid crystal for display. CONSTITUTION:At least one compd. of the formula V, etc. selected from among an anthraquinone deriv., a naphthoquinone deriv. and an azo compd. is added to a twisted nematic liquid crystal for display, such as one of the formula I (wherein R1 is CnH2n+1 or CnH2n+1O; R2 is CnH2nO, NC<-> or formula II-IV; n is a natural number). EFFECT:Since the alpha value of a conventional liquid crystal compsn. is 0.30-0.50, voltage difference DELTAV per gradation is 0.01V or less in order to obtain ten gradation necessary at the lowest for TV picture display, which makes voltage control difficult. An the contrary, the alpha value of the compsn. is not less than 0.6, so that it is possible to obtain DELTAV>=0.01V and more than ten gradations are easily obtd.
