PURPOSE:To easily obtain at a good yield a liquefied product of cellulosic biomass suible for liquid fuel, etc. by heating the cellulosic biomass in the presence of a mixture of a neutral, oxygen-contg. org. solvent and water under pressure of an inert gas. CONSTITUTION:1pt.wt. cellulosic biomass such as wood flour is mixed with about 2-80ps.wt. mixture of a neutral, oxygen-cong. org. solvent, such as acetone or ethyl acetate, and water, and about 0.001-0.5pt.wt. alkaline material such as potassium carbonate or sodium hydroxide is pref. added additionally. Then the resulting mixture is liquefied by heating at about 200-400 deg.C and pressurized with an inert gas such as nitrogen gas to about 5-100atm. Then the purpose liquefied product of the cellulosic biomass is obtd. by extracting the liquid reaction product with a solvent such as acetone.
