A machine tool control system includes a computer generating command words which are held in a data store and singly transferred to an output register either once or a plurality of times. As shown, a cutter location tape is read by a post-processor 2 which converts the information on to cards, or magnetic tape, which are fed to input/ output devices 4 of a computer 1. The electrical signals from the devices 4 are fed to central processing unit 6 associated with a core store 27. The contents of the core store is interrogated by a channel 10, 11 for each machine which contains an output register into which is brought the contents of a selected area of the core store. Channel 10 is connected through a transmission control 14 to receive control unit 14 for a machine tool 22. Each programmed command word stored in the core store 27 is calculated for a set resolution of machine travel and ratio m of set resolution to actual machine resolution is programmed in the command word and set into a pre-set counter 36 through the transmission control unit 14. The receive control unit incorporates a pulse oscillator, an output of which is fed to the pre-set counter 36 to derive a pulse train on line 38 which gates m repetitive command words to the receive control unit for every word read by the channel 10 from the core store and held in the output register. When the travel is within the set resolution the ratio m is programmed as unity whereby each command word is read once and the machine tool effects a single actual resolution of travel. It is stated that the ratio m can be directly set in the counter 36 and the output register located in the receive control unit whereby the data transmission rate is reduced so alleviating noise and bandwidth problems where the computer is remote from the machine tool. |
