Separating solid particles from a mixture with a liquid carrier comprises (a) supplying the mixt. and a synthetic flocculating agent with a mol. wt. above 500,000 to a vertical truncate conical container, with its wide end placed upwards, (b) allowing the mixt. to settle into an upper clear layer and a lower agglomerated layer, (c) stirring the agglomerated layer with a stirrer arranged in the lower half of the container, (d) removing solid material from the bottom of the container, and (e) discharging the clear liquid from the container. The process may be carried out continuously. The flocculating agent is pref. a polyacrylamide or an acrylamide/(meth)acrylic acid copolymer. The amount of the flocculating agent is pref. 0.9-13.5 kg/t. solids (dry basis). The conical container is provided with a bottom outlet valve, and a stirrer arranged also the vertical axis of the container in such a position that the plastic mass can be stirred without essentially disturbing the liquid above this mass. The container also has an inlet apparatus, and a discharge outlet for the clear liquid. The stirrer is pref. arranged so that all of its parts rotate at a velocity of 0.9-2.1 m/mm. The process is specially useful for (a) removing inorganic sediment from cool washing appts)., and washing appts., and mineral process appts., and (b) removing organic sediment from sewage and paper processing plants. The process is efficient, and can be operated at low cost as regards both process costs and storage costs. |
