PURPOSE:To reduce the variation in the location of a spot radiating X-rays by removing the disturbance of the electric and the magnetic fields by installing a conductive shield having a spherical inner surface around the space including the ends of the coaxial electrodes of a plasma X-ray source. CONSTITUTION:A cylindrical electrode 1 acting as the anode and a cylindrical electrode 2 acting as the cathode are coaxially installed in a discharge case 4 charged with a gas such as neon. And, a spherical metallic shield 7 having the same electric potential as the cylindrical electrode 2 is installed surrounding a space 8 around the end of the cylindrical electrode 1 in such a manner as to make the center of the shield 7 coincide with the end of the cylindrical electrode 1, thereby assembling a plasma focus discharge tube. A high-voltage pulse from a capacitor 5 is applied across the electrodes 1 and 2 to produce plasma thereby radiating soft X-rays. Accordingly, it is possible to prevent any disturbance of the electric and the magnetic fields in the space for pinching the plasma, thereby stabilizing the location of the spot.
