PURPOSE:To eliminate feeling of mental disorder for colors due to the difference in white balance at low/high light by modulating both of two kinds of voltages in-phase applied to a deflection electrode to deflect an electron beam in a vertical direction and modulating its DC level. CONSTITUTION:A modulation signal 52 generates a modulation signal (triangle wave signal) to deflect vertical deflection signals v, v'. A modulation signal from the modulation circuit 52 is fed to amplifiers 51, 51' amplifying vertical deflection signals v, v' from a D/A converter 39 and the vertical deflection signals v<+>, v<-> as the modulation of the DC level by a modulation signal from the modulation circuit 52 in phase are obtained at an output terminal of the amplifiers 51, 51'. A Vc, that is, a center voltage between the v<+> and v<-> gives effect on the vertical focus diameter. Then the vertical focus is a time mean value of each focus caused at the application of a voltage at three points alpha, beta, gamma in figure. Thus, the luminance level has a level difference as a fixed pattern in a conventional example, then this device offers timewise smoothing.
