PURPOSE:To improve yield of the titled compound economically by reaction at a relatively low temperature while maintaining excellent catalytic activity, by hydrogenating aromatic carboxylic acids in the presence of zirconium oxide containing rhenium as a catalyst to obtain the titled compound. CONSTITUTION:Aromatic carboxylic acids are hydrogenated using zironium oxide containing rhenium as an essential element, more preferably zirconium oxide containing a small amount of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal compound along with rhenium as a catalyst to obtain the aimed compound. The reaction can be carried out either in the gaseous phase or in the liquid phase; however, it is conventionally carried out in the gaseous phase in a fixed- bed process. The reaction temperature is 200-400 deg.C. The amount of rhenium to be added to the above-mentioned catalyst is within 0.0001-0.5 atoms range, preferably 0.001-0.1 atoms range based on 1 atom zirconium. |
