The ethanolamine salt of 6-cyclohexyl 1-hydroxy 4-methyl 2(1H)-pyridone is made by (a) reacting 2-cyclohexyl 4-methyl 6-chloro pyridine with anhydrous NH3 under high pressure to obtain the 6-amino cpd. The prod. is treated with peracetic acid in acetic acid to oxidise the pyridine nitrogen; and the (c) neturalised with aq. NaHCO3 and extra.. The soln. is then concentrated to dryness and diazotised with NaNO2 at low temp. in aq. soln. which is then poured onto a mixt. of H2SO4 and hot water to obtain 6-cyclohexyl 1-hydroxy 4-methyl 2(1H)-pyridone which precipitates at neutral pH. This is dissolved in ether for dehydration with anhydrous Na2SO4; and a salt is formed with ethanolamine and the solvent is evapd..
