An electrode includes a number of continuous fibres (13) each having a thin, firmly adherent metal coating (14). - Pref. electrode is mfd by (a) providing a continuous length of a number of core fibres (13); (b) plating at least an end of each core fibre with a uniform, firmly adherent metal layer (14); (c) positioning an electrical connector (16,17) in contact with the metal coated fibre ends; and (d) joining the coated ends and connector by an electrically conductive metal (18) extending between them and forming an integral fibre-metal matrix.
