Alpha-omega-dicarboxylic acids of formula (I) and their in vivo hydrolysable carboxylic acid derivs. are new. R1, R2=lower alkyl (opt. substd. by OH, lower alkoxy, halogen or phenyl, the phenyl group opt. in turn being mono- or polysubstd. by OH, lower alkoxy, lower alkyl or halogen), lower alkenyl, lower alkynyl, 3-7C cycloalkyl or phenyl (opt. substd. by OH, halogen, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy); X,Y=H, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, OH, CN, carboxyl, lower alkoxycarbonyl or carbamoyl; Q=unbranched, opt. unsatd. 8-14C alkylene chain (1) which is opt. substd. by O, halogen, OH or lower alkoxy, (2) which is opt. interrupted by one or more heteroatoms, and (3) in which 1-4 chain members can be components of a 3-7C cycloalkyl or phenyl ring; provided that (a) when Q is -(CH2)8-, -(CH2)10- or -(CH2)12-, R1 and R2 are both methyl and Y is H, then X is other than H, ethoxycarbonyl, Br, CN or methyl, and that (b) when R1 and R2 are methyl and X and Y are H, then Q is other than -CH2CH2-(p-C6H4)-CH2CH2-.
