Alpha-(4-chlorophenoxy)methyl alpha-(1,1-dimethylethyl) 1H-1,2,4-triazole -1-ethanol is made by (a) reacting 4-chlorophenol with a cpd. of formula (I) under basic conditions by use of an alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate, in an organic solvent, e.g. isopropanol, toluene, iso-amyl alcohol, DMF, DMSO, hexamethyl formamide or mixts., at from 50 deg.C to reflux temp.; and (b) isolating the prod. by conventional methods and re-crystallising from organic solvent. X is a reactive gp., e.g. halogen, methano-sulphonate or p-toluene-sulphonate.
