PURPOSE:To increase a heat radiating effect and to improve the productivity per floor area by providing a cavity to each cathode lead part of a series type electrolytic apparatus and introducing and discharging a cooling medium into and out of such cavity. CONSTITUTION:Cathodes 11 each consisting of an iron plate, an anode 19 consisting of a thick graphite plate and intermediate electrodes 23 are disposed into the series type electrolytic apparatus. The cathodes 11 are joined via connectors 27, 28, 29 to lead parts 30, 31. The cavity 35 is provided to each of the lead parts 30, 31 along the part from the above a cap 32 to the part below the liquid level. A blast pipe (or water feed pipe) 37 and a discharge part (or drain port) 39 are provided to the cavity 35. The heat radiating effect is thus improved and the apparatus for electrolyzing molten chloride having the improved productivity per floor area is obtd.
