PURPOSE:To improve an operating property, by altering a compensation value depending on the condition of prescribed change in the detected value of the concentration of exhaust gas and on the magnitude of the load on an engine, to enhance the output power of the engine. CONSTITUTION:If it is judged in a step 18 that the output level of an O2 sensor has changed over, proportion term control is performed in a step 19 and other following steps. In a step 20, a compensation value PL for the case that the output of the O2 sensor has changed form a high side to a low side is set. In a step 22, a compensation value PR for the case that the output of the O2 sensor has changed from the low side to the high side is set. The compensation value PL is larger than the other compensation valur PR. In a step 24 and other following steps, integration term control is performed. This results in enhancing the output power of an engine to improve an operating property.
