PURPOSE:To obtain acicular iron oxyhydroxide useful as a preparation raw material of ferromagnetic powder for magnetic recording medium, by reacting a ferric salt with an alkali metal hydroxide under specific condition, and subjecting the resultant ferric hydroxide to hydrothermal treatment. CONSTITUTION:A ferric salt is made to react with an alkali metal hydroxide in the presence of water at <=50 deg.C to obtain ferric hydroxide. In the above process, a water-soluble compound of a metal selected from Co, Zn, Cu and Mg is added to the reaction system in an amount of 2-10atom% based on the iron atom. The produced slurry of ferric hydroxide is subjected to the hydrothermal treatment at 120-200 deg.C to obtain the objective acicular iron oxyhydroxide.
