PURPOSE:To maintain the visibility of the binary image excellent even when recording the image that is a mixture of the gradation image and the binary image and to eliminate influences by the scanning line pitch deviation by performing the scanning and exposure as changing the spot diameter on the scanning line between the gradation image recording and the binary-image recording. CONSTITUTION:The intensity of the beam recorded on the recording medium is varied to express the gradation image. In case when the image to record is the gradation image, a concave lens 3 is controlled to move toward a convex lens 4 and to enlarge the beam spot on the scanning line L, which is made the long-diameter spot. But in case when the image to record is the binary image of such as letters, the concave lens 3 is controlled to return to the original place and to shrink the spot on the scanning line, which is made the short-diameter spot. By means of this control, now that the scanning and exposure form recording the gradation image is performed with the long-diameter spot, the image recording is made free from any influence by the scanning line pitch deviation. Also, when recording the binary image, because the scanning and exposure are done with short-diameter spot, the recorded image becomes a clear and exquisite one.
