PURPOSE:To obtain a piston ring having excellent wear resistance without abnormal wear by adding and mixing ceramic particles to an with a gray cast iron to be used as a base material. CONSTITUTION:The gray cast iron 4 is heated to the solid-liquid co-existence temp. region where the liquid phase and solid phase co-exist, i.e., the intermediate temp. between the primary crystal temp. and eutectic temp. The ceramic particles 4 are added to such molten gray cast iron 4 under stirring by a stirring bar 5. The molten case iron 4 is then poured into a casting mold in which a core is disposed to manufacture a cylindrical casting. Such cylindrical casting is horizontally sliced and the joint faces are finished by machining, by which a piston ring 11 is obtd.
