<p>PURPOSE:To improve the withstand voltage of an ethylene copolymer as an electrical insulation material or its properties as a cellular material or as a modifier for polymers, by forming a copolymer of ethylene with a specified comonomer and an ethylenically unsaturated monomer. CONSTITUTION:A copolymer comprising 85.0-99.995mol% ethylene units, 0.005-5mol% comonomer units of formula I (wherein Ar is formula II or III, R is H or methyl, R2 and R3 are each H, Cl, a 1-4C linear or branched alkyl) and 0-10mol% ethylenically unsaturated monomer units. This copolymer has a density of 0.860-0.970g/cm<3> and a melt index of 0.05-100g/10min. As the comonomer of formula I, benzyl (meth)acrylate is particularly preferable. When this ethylene copolymer is used as an electrical insulation material, it is preferable that the copolymer is produced by high-pressure radical polymerization (at 50-400 deg.C and about 500-4,000kg/cm<2>) freed from a problem of catalyst residues.</p> |
