<p>Apparatuses for transporting containers on hatch covers, and container ships equipped with these apparatuses. An apparatus according to the invention comprises fixed vertical slides (2) which extend above the deck of a container ship and which are fastened on fixed transverse structures (1). Each hatch cover comprises a central cover (6a) which can be manoeuvred vertically, and two side covers (6b). The side covers are equipped with wheels (8) which run on rails (9a, 9b). Horizontal jacks (10) move the side covers (6b) longitudinally in order to retract them behind the slides so as to free the hatches.
