An optical system for recording a colour-coded image of a coloured object on a black-and-white panchromatic film comprises a camera objective, an iris diaphragm, and in the image plane of the objective a diffraction grating Fig. 4A having at least two periodic functions 45, 46 each extending across the grating in an array of diffraction rulings, each array being orientated at a different angle across the filter. In a first embodiment the three arrays 45, 46, 47 of diffraction rulings are formed in yellow, magenta and cyan respectively separated by black or white spaces. This grating is located in the plane of the black-and-white film. A system for decoding the black-and-white image produced is described Fig. 8 (not shown). In a modification the filter 130 Fig. 9A is provided in the image plane 120 with three sets of uniquely orientated black- and-white diffraction rulings. The convolution of the grating 130 with the image 120 is produced by a transform lens 135 in its Fourier transform plane 140. A spectral filter 150 is positioned in the plane 140 and arranged to stop all but first and possibly zero orders of diffraction. A final colour coded image is formed in a plane 160 by a second transform lens 155. In a further form, Fig. 9B (not shown) the second transform lens is omitted. |
