An antibacterial polypeptide is disclosed, which is represented by the amino acid sequence: H2N-Gly-Trp-Leu-X1-Lys-Ile-Gly-Lys-Lys-Ile-Glu-Arg-Val-Gly-Gln-His-Thr -Arg-Asp-A la-Thr-Ile-Gln-X2-X3-Gly-X4-Ala-Gln-Gln-Ala-Ala-Asn-Val-Ala-Ala-Thr-Al a-Arg-COOH wherein: X1 represents Lys or Arg; X2, Gly or Val; X3, Leu or Ile; and X4, Ile or Val, and which is produced by imparting injury to the body wall of larvae of an insect belonging to the order Diptera or Hymenoptera such as Sarcophaga peregrina, obtaining the hemolymph from the larvae thus injured, removing hemocytes and fatty components from said hemolymph, and then obtaining, from the thus purified hemolymph, the polypeptide. The polypeptide is characterized by its antibacterial activity against a lot of Gram (-) bacteria and by being edible. |
