In a radiation image recording and reproducing system using a stimulable phosphor sheet (4), a voltage generated at a bleeder resistor of a photomultiplier (7) for conducting image read-out is detected at the step of radiation image read-out at least for the stimulable phosphor sheet or a portion thereof where the level of X-ray exposure amount is higher than a predetermined level, and the exposure amount of erasing light (16) is controlled on the basis of the detected voltage. Or, the erasing light exposure amount is controlled on the basis of an output current of the photomultiplier when the output current is equal to or smaller than a predetermined value which is smaller than a saturated value of the output current, and the bleeder resistor voltage of the photomultiplier is detected and the erasing light exposure amount is controlled on the basis of the detected voltage when the output current of the photomultiplier is larger than the predetermined value.
