An axial flow liquid pump comprises an outer tube (29), a smaller diameter inner tube (33), and a driven shaft (13) journaled near the top of the inner tube. An upwardly opening cup-shaped rotor (40) is secured in the lower end of the shaft (13) such that a cylindrical sidewall (41) thereof is at least partially spaced between the inner tube and the outer tube. A helical flange (44) is secured to the outer surface of the cylindrical sidewall (44). Radial passages (45) are provided in said rotor below the helical flange (44). The passages are arranged to be above the lower end of the inner tube. A baffle plate (37) having passages (46) therein is secured just above the rotor (40).
