PURPOSE:A yarn of polyacrylonitrile polymer is washed with water under irradiation of ultrasonic waves of a specific frequency to produce the titled fiber which is suitable for production of carbon fiber, because it contains a reduced amount of solvent remaining and causes no fusion or the like in the drying and densifying process. CONSTITUTION:A solution of an acrylonitrile polymer is extruded into a yarn, drawn, washed with water, dried and densified to form an acrylic fiber where the yarn is washed under irradiation with ultrasonic waves of 10-90kHz. EFFECT:The amount of the solvent remaining in the yarn can be reduced lower than 0.03wt%.
