PURPOSE:To produce a high-purity, linear, super-MW polymer economically, by irradiating a solution of a polymerizable unsaturated bond-containing monomer, water and a specified solvent and post-polymerizing the monomer. CONSTITUTION:An inert gas is blown into a solution of 5-90wt% polymerizable double bond-containing monomer of the formula (wherein l is 0 or 1 and m is 1-12), 95-10wt% water and at least 10wt% common solvent (e.g., methanol) for the monomer and water to remove dissolved oxygen. This solution is degassed at 10<-1>-10<-4> Torr and irradiated with an ionized gas plasma at 40-150W for 10-3,600sec in vacuum. This solution is post-polymerized at 100 deg.C or below in the absence of plasma and the formed polymer is precipitated sequentially.
