PURPOSE:To discharge coke safely, by controlling feed of inert gas to keep space pressure in a discharging unit always higher than pressure in a lower part of a cooling tower when redhot coke is cooled in the cooling tower and discharged from the discharging unit at the bottom of the cooling tower. CONSTITUTION:Redhot coke in a bucket 1 is fed into a cooling tower 2 from the top of the tower and is brought into contact with a cooling gas 12 in counter flow, for cooling. A plurality of valves in discharge systems 13, 14, 22 at the bottom of the cooling tower 2 are controlled for sequential opening and closing and an inert gas 16 is introduced for discharge of coke. Pressures in at least two of the discharge systems 13, 14, 22 and in the lower part of the cooling tower 2 are detected and feed of the inert gas 16 is controlled to keep pressures in spaces between the discharge systems 13, 14, 22, gates and valves always higher than pressure in the lower part of the cooling tower 12.
