PURPOSE:On the reaction of an aromatic nitro compound with a lower aliphatic alcohol, the water concentration in the reaction system is kept lower than a specific level, thus inhibiting the formation of aromatic amine, a by-product, and producing title ester with industrial advatage. CONSTITUTION:On the reaction of an aromatic nitro compound as dinitrotoluene with an aliphatic alcohol and carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst containing Pb-V-tertiary amine, the water content in the reaction system is kept below 1000, preferably 700 ppm. The above catalyst is preferably supported on a carrier as activated carbon and contains a palladium compound contaning 0.001-0.1 wt% of metal palladium, tri-or tetrachloride of vanadium and a heteroaromatic tertiary amine. The water content is adjusted by controlling the water content of the alcohol. EFFECT:The use of toxic phosgen is unnecessary. |
