PURPOSE:To obtain the overlap effect of respective soft focuses of plural liquid- crystal cells by laminating plural liquid-crystal cells, which have island-shaped nonconductive areas arranged irregularly, in either of transparent conductive layers which are formed across a liquid-crystal layer in a direction different from the regular direction of an oriented film. CONSTITUTION:Switches 29 and 39 are turned on independently to produce a specific soft focus effect. On the other hand, when the switches 29 and 30 are turned on at the same time to apply voltages to a couple of transparent electrodes 23 and 24 and a couple of electrodes 33 and 34, liquid-crystal molecules of liquid crystals 26 and 37 are oriented in directions M and N respectively and extraordinary light beams transmitted through electric-field unapplied areas of the respective liquid-crystal layers have mutually orthogoal planes of oscillation. Consequently, optical path differences between the extraordinary light beams of the respective liquid-crystal layers and ordinary light beams having the same planes of oscillation are independent for the respective liquid crystals. Therefore, when two-layer liquid-crystal cells are driven at the same time, the effect in which soft focuses overlap one another is obtained.
