MAGNETIC RECORDING MEDIUM

PURPOSE:To improve the running durability of a magnetic layer by incorporating whiskers having a specific acicular ratio into a magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic layer of a magnetic recording medium having a nonmagnetic base and the magnetic layer contg. the ferromagnetic powder dispersed into a binder on said base contains the whiskers having >=50:1 acicular ratio. The whiskers are particularly effective for the magnetic recording medium for which ferromagnetic alloy powder having >=40m<2>/g specific surface area is used as the ferromagnetic powder. There is no particular limitation for the average length of the whiskers and more preferably the whiskers having 5.0-300mum length are used. The whiskers incorporated into the magnetic layer act as a reinforcing agent for the binder of the magnetic layer thus contributing to the improved strength of the magnetic layer.
