摘要 <p>PURPOSE:To form a liquid crystal which indicates the smectic phase of a uniform monodomain over the entire surface by the constitution in which substrates have orientation control films formed of an org. tantalum compd. and org. resin at the boundary face in contact with a smectic liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:The orientation control films 3 consisting of the compsn. consisting essentially of the org. tantalum compd. are formed on plastic substrates 1 on which transparent electrodes 3 are formed in a liquid crystal element having the cell structure sealed with the smectic liquid crystal between a pair of the substrates provided with the electrodes. More specifically, Ta(OC2 H5)5 or Ta(OC3H7)5 is used for the org. tantalum compd. A polyester resin or the like is more particularly usable for the org. resin. Orientation performance is not satisfactorily obtainable if the concn. of the org. tantalum and org. resin in a coating liquid contg. the org. tantalum and org. resin is too low in the stage of forming the films 3 by using said coating liquid. The waving of the film, the interference color of the reflected light arising from a refractive index and the increase in the resistance value on the transparent conductive film arise if the concn. is too high and therefore the concn. of 1-10wt% is preferable.</p>
