PURPOSE:An aromatic polyester which can be melt-molded at 400 deg.C or below and give a molding of a good balance between mechanical property and optical anisotropy, comprising specified structural units. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic polyester (of an intrinsic viscosity as measured in a 0.1% pentafluorophenol solution at 60 deg.C >=0.35 and a melt viscosity of about 10-15,000P), comprising 85-10mol% structural units of formula I (units derived from p-hydroxybenzoic acid) and 15-90mol% structural units of formula II (units derived from two or more aromatic dihydroxy compounds and 4,4'- diphenyldicarboxylic acid), wherein R in formula II is a combination of at least two groups selected from among formulas III, IV, V, VI and VII (except a combination of formula V with formula VII).
