PURPOSE:To prevent a cavitation in a vane pump by forming a notch in the edge of a suction port on the side where a suction is terminated for partially communicating a closed chamber formed between adjacent vanes with a suction port. CONSTITUTION:A vane pump is provided with suction ports 12 formed in a side plate 8 and a pressure plate 9 for communicating an annular groove 11 with a pump chamber partitioned by adjacent vanes 7. A notch 15 is formed in the edge 12b the suction port 12 on the side where a suction is terminated. The notch 15 is effectuated by providing a passage for allowing a closed chamber formed between the adjacent vanes 7 and the suction port 12 to partially communicate with each other when one of the vanes 7 passes one of the edges 12b to initiate a closing action by means of the adjacent vanes 7. This allows an impact pressure generated near the edge 12b to pass toward the suction port side, suppressing a cavitation.
