1,242,531. Differential gearing. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. 13 Sept., 1968 [20 June, 1967], No. 28510/67. Headings F2D and F2Q. In a differential g ar assembly in which a pair of pinions 11, 12, Fig. 1, each engage both of a pair of gear-wheels 1, 2 spaced apart on a common axis, each pinion is rotatably mounted on an individual one of two members 23, 24 which rotate together about the common axis with the rotational axes of the pinions extending radially, the members being angularly displaceable relative to one another about the common axis to urge the pinion teeth against the gear-wheel teeth. A screw 32 in member 24 is rotated into engagement with a tongue (27), Fig. 2 (not shown), integral with the other member 23 to effect the angular displacement. The displacement effectively reduces the clearance between shafts 15, 16 and their bearings, the clearance between the gear and pinion teeth and the clearance between shaft 3 and its journal bearings. The differential has rotary inputs through anti-backlash gears 21, 22 and an output through an anti-backlash gear 8.
