1,213,906. Hollow spindles. GLEASON WORKS. 2 July, 1968 [22 Sept., 1967], No. 31566/68. Headings B3B and B3T. A spindle 10 of a machine tool includes a work holding device 13, e.g. a collet chuck or expanding mandrel, operated by a draw rod 17 against a spring stack 23. The draw rod is retracted against the spring stack 23 by a non-rotatable hydraulic device that is spring biased out of contact with the rotating spindle 10 when no pressure is acting. The device comprises an annular piston 31 movable within a cylinder 32, 33, 34 and including a bearing 37 for contact with the rotating end of the draw rod 17 and a bearing 43 for contact with a shoulder formed on the end of the spindle 10. Springs 61 and 56 ensure the separation of the device from the rotating spindle and draw rod when no pressure is acting. The device and spindle end is covered in a housing 11 against which the springs 56 bear. The housing 11 has a cut-away portion 64 for access of a drive belt to a pulley 63. |
