PURPOSE:To harden the surface of an iron-base metal without melting the metal by covering the surface of the metal with a laser light absorber made of a metal having a m.p. in the austenite range of the iron-base metal or above and by irradiating laser light to melt the absorber. CONSTITUTION:The surface of an iron-base metal is covered with a laser light absorber made of a metal having a m.p. in the austenite range of the iron-base metal or above, e.g., pure Cu, a Cu alloy, pure Ni or an Ni alloy. Laser light is irradiated on the surface of the absorber to melt the absorber. The surface of the iron-base metal is indirectly heated by the melting and it is hardened without melting the metal.
