PURPOSE:To keep a constant gasification reaction temp. in a gasifier provided with a retorting gasification zone and a catalyst layer, by forming the catalyst layer in a multistage manner and connecting an oxygen supply means to a space between the catalyst layers to burn a part of produced cracking gas. CONSTITUTION:A catalyst layer 8 is installed in a multistage manner at the top of a reactor 1 and an oxygen supply means 11 is connected to a space between the catalyst layers. A raw material 3 such as coal or wood is fed to a retorting gasification zone 5 and subjected to dry distillation, partial combustion and water gas reaction at about 700-1,000 deg.C supplying steam 7 and oxygen 6 for combustion. The produced gas contg. a high-molecular polycondensate such as tar is introduced into the catalyst layer 8, where it is converted into a cracking gas by subjecting to the reaction of the formula in the presence of steam, and the obtd. cracking gas is recovered from an outlet 12, wherein a part of the produced cracking gas is burnt with oxygen 11 to supply heat necessary to the cracking gasification.
