PURPOSE:To input a picture even from a voluminous irregular plane such as a book by unifying a picture inputting section and a scanning timing detecting section and enabling the manual picture inputting device itself to trace any pat on the subject by a roller for timing detection in the scanning timing detecting section. CONSTITUTION:Rotation of a roller 7 that rolls on the subject is transmitted to a small gear 10 of smaller diameter by a gear 7a attached to the roller 7 with movement of a picture inputting device for detecting the position. A slit 10b pierced in a disk 10a attached to this is detected by alight emitting body (light emission diode) 11a and a light receiving part (phototransistor) 11b and the scanning timing of the picture inputting is taken by them. As a picture inputting opening 9 is between rollers 7, 8, information on the subject on which the picture inputting opening passed is inputted by pressing rollers 7, 8 on the subject and moving the manual picture inputting device as required.
