PURPOSE:To enable intermittent slow reproduction in VTR that makes tracking utilizing a pilot signal by determining timing of starting tape running basing on output of a comparator that compares a phase error signal and reference voltage at the time of still reproduction. CONSTITUTION:When a slow reproduction command signal is applied to an input terminal 21, a tape stop permission signal (a) and a tape running permission signal (b) are outputted from a 1/N slow reference signal preparing circuit 24. Delay time from rising of a head switching pulse (c) is controlled by the state of tracing at the time of tape running. After lapse of specified delay time from rising of the head switching pulse (c), reversing braking is given to a capstan motor Mc for a period corresponding to metastable period tau2 of a monostable multivibrator 29 and running of the tape is stopped.
