PURPOSE:To observe the peripheral part of an optical fiber, which cannot be observed with a transmitted light, without requiring the correction of the eccentricity of a core, by heating the end face of the fiber and arranging a stopper where a mirror surface facing the front end part at 45 deg. is formed and observing the end face of the fiber from the axial direction. CONSTITUTION:When discharge is applied to the front end part of the optical fiber for a short time, for example, 0.2-0.5sec to heat this front end part, a core 5 and double refraction axis parts 7a and 7b are slightly protruded forward by the difference of melting point among the core, a clad, and double refraction axis parts. The stopper where the mirror surface facing the front end part at 45 deg. is formed is arranged between optical fibers which are preliminarily heated and face each other, and end faces in axial directions of right and left fibers are observed by a reflex microscope. Since the core 5 or double refraction axis parts 7a and 7b are protruded, the direction of reflection of the light is changed to observe the core 5 and double refraction axis parts 7a and 7b. |
