PURPOSE:To form a magnetooptic element of high capacity such as an optical isolator whose optical transmission quantity is large, by bringing surfaces of plural magnetic garnet films into contact with each other and joining them to increase practically the thickness of the magnetic garnet films. CONSTITUTION:A ferromagnetic garnet crystal film 2 is grown on a nonmagnetic garnet substrate 1 by the liquid epitaxial method, and surfaces of ferromagnetic garnet films 2 of two nonmagnetic garnet substrates 1 are brought into contact with each other and are joined to obtain the magnetooptic element where the thickness of the ferromagnetic garnet film is increased. Thus, an optical beam 10 having a large beam diameter can be made incident on and be transmitted to this magnetooptic element to facilitate constituting a high-capacity optical system. The magnetooptic element has an end face (A-A'), on which the optical means 10 is made incident, and an end face (B-B'), from which the optical beam 10 is discharged, polished optically to enhance the capacity furthermore. If this element is used as an optical isolator or an optical circulator, a magnetic field 11 is applied in the direction of the optical axis. |
