PURPOSE:To read pictures on the face and back of a face-back serial original under the same picture quality condition by using an original feeding mechanism to return the original to the same reading section after the original is inverted. CONSTITUTION:One original is fed at one time, and when the face is read first (state of original 14b) and reading completion is detected, an original stopper 22 turns counterclockwise and retreats from the original feeding surface. From that state, a sheet belt 7 turns again and the original is fed between the sheet belt 7 and an original guide 30 and fed into the gap between the belt 7 and a feeding belt 10 for inverting by an original branching gate 13 (original 14c). An original 14c is sent out to a hopper 6 by a pressure roller 11 (original 14d). The original housed in the hopper 6 is fed to the reading position by the pressure roller 11 and the belt 7 and the back of the original is read by a reading part 3. The above operation is repeated for each piece of paper.
