PURPOSE:To make it possible to erase only one frame in any case by providing N-number of erasing heads whose track width is equal to that of recording and reproducing heads and using N-number of erasing heads in the standard mode and using only one erasing head in the N-fold speed mode. CONSTITUTION:When the standard mode is selected, both of two erasing heads 20 and 21 are used, and heads 20 and 21 trace tracks 9 and 10 formed by heads 4 and 5 to erase information because the track width of heads 20 and 21 is equal to that of recording and reproducing heads 4 and 5. When the double speed mode where the recording time is extended by twice is selected, the speed of a tape 7 is reduced to a half, and the head 5 (or 4) records information on the already formed track 9 (or 10) so that tracks overlap by 1/2 with respect to width. Since only one of heads 20 and 21 is used in this case, the head 20 or 21 traces the magnetic tape 7 once while heads 4 and 5 form tracks 9 and 10 respectively. |
