The invention relates to a self-locking worm gearing, the worm shaft of which is connected to a drive shaft in such a way as to be locked against rotation and is mounted with the drive shaft in a housing. To form a safety feature to prevent the load from falling, the worm shaft is connected to a friction clutch which in turn is connected via a free-wheel to the housing, the free-wheel locking in the lowering direction of the load, and the worm shaft being axially displaceable relative to the drive shaft by applying a torque to the worm wheel for operating the friction clutch.
