An automatic transmission system for a motor vehicle, in which the gear changes are performed according to electrical signals, has signal generators, which generate a first signal indicating the speed of the vehicle and a second signal, which indicates the magnitude of the operation of an accelerator pedal. A third signal which indicates the speed when the accelerator pedal is operated, is generated on the basis of the first and second signals and the gear change is controlled according to the first to third signals. The system thereby responds to the driver's intention through operation of the accelerator pedal. Consequently it is possible to shift the transmission into the optimum position according to the operation of the accelerator pedal, in order to ensure optimum vehicle handling.
