In a device for the actuation of a climbing brake for motor vehicles, in which the sealed venting connection of a footbrake valve can be fed with compressed air by means of a separate control valve, a shut-off device (25; 81) is provided, which prevents any accidental infeed of compressed air into the venting connection (45) whilst travelling; the shut-off device comprises a check valve (25), which opens the connection to the venting connection of the footbrake valve only when the footbrake valve (1) is subject to normal footbrake actuation. The shut-off device may also comprise an electrical shut-off switch (81), which can be acted upon pneumatically and releases the current supply of an electromagnetically operatable control valve connected to the venting connection of the footbrake valve only when it is acted upon by a pressure of the footbrake valve triggered in normal footbrake operation of the latter. <IMAGE>
