The movement of a carriage 19, which can move in a reciprocating manner in the direction of the double arrow 18, is transmitted (via a tooth rod 15 with helical teeth, a gear wheel 12 with helical teeth and a freewheeling coupling 13) to a drive shaft 7 for a transportation roller 3 for the step-by-step transportation of material in the form of a strip. The toothed rod 15 is supported on the one hand on guide pegs 16 and 17, which are connected to the carriage 19, such that it can move in a reciprocating manner laterally in the direction of the double arrow 21, and on the other hand is guided via guide pins 25 and 26 (which slide in longitudinal grooves 29 and 30 in guide rods 27 and 28 which are supported such that they can pivot) in the longitudinal direction of the double arrow 18, this longitudinal movement being combined with the lateral reciprocating movement as a function of the angular position beta of the guide rods 27 and 28.
