The invention relates to a method for separating slabs, billets or the like fed by a feeding device to a separating point and transferring the separated workpiece to a subsequent transport apparatus, a lifting apparatus being designed in two parts with upper blade trolleys carrying supporting blades and a lifting trolley carrying the blade trolleys, the blade trolleys being horizontally movable in relation to and on the lifting trolley, all blade trolleys being lowered and the lifting trolley being advanced by the amount of the width of the workpiece to be separated when a stop has been reached and then the blade trolleys being raised, in order in this way to lift out the workpiece and transfer it to the following transport device by movement of the lifting trolley. Furthermore, the invention relates to a method of depositing billets, slabs or the like in a predetermined arrangement once they have been separated on a corresponding storage apparatus, the maximum external rectangle of each workpiece being determined by mechanical, optical or electronic measuring devices and the workpiece being deposited on the following storage apparatus at a minimum distance in accordance with the external rectangle determined for it according to heat engineering criteria.
